abstract: In this presentation, I show the strengths of a model based approach and its associated signal processing techniques in handling calibration and imaging problems. This will be illustrated by some examples based on actual LOFAR data. I will also demonstrate that such an approach becomes feasible in the LOFAR and SKA era, especially for processing of data from their respective cores. This has the important implication that advanced signal processing techniques can be used to tackle the challenging problems associated with dealing with time, frequency and direction dependent effects.
